Mahama must step down; he has dented Ghana's image - PPP

John Mahama
The Progressive People’s Party (PPP), has called on President John Dramani Mahama to step down as president following the controversy surrounding a 'car gift' given to him.

Some sections of Ghanaians have expressed anger over reports that President Mahama was given a brand new Ford Expedition in 2012 by a Burkinabe contractor, Djibril Kanazoe who won the bid to construct the $650,000 Ghana Embassy Wall in the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagadougou.

Many anti-corruption campaigners have slammed the president for what they describe as his disregard for the guidelines on conflict of interest in accepting the vehicle gift.

However, Government in a statement issued by Communications Minister, Edward Omane Boamah said even though the car was received, it had nothing to do with the contract awarded.

The PPP, which has also waded into the controversy, said the president’s acceptance of the gift is in violation of the country’s constitution.

At a press conference held in Accra, Friday, Chairman of the party Nii Allotey Brew Hammond, said the president has dented the image of the country.

"The president must take immediate steps to redeem his image and that of the country.

"We therefore demand an immediate apology to the good people of Ghana for bringing shame and embarrassment to our dear country.

"The publication of his assets declaration forms completed before and after he became a Member of Parliament, Minister of State, Vice President and as president," he said.

He added “that an administration that justifies such gift taking cannot be trusted to give clean contracts during an election and will not accept any new contract given by this administration when it assumes office.”
