Queen Mother of Akim-Akooko, Nana Afia Korantemaa |
Eighteen suspects arrested in connection with the chaos at
Akooko, which resulted in the killing of two persons and injury of several
others including three policemen last month had been refused bail by the
Koforidua District Court ‘B’ presided over by Mr. Abdul-Razak Musah.
They have been charged with six counts of conspiracy to
commit murder, two counts of murder, causing unlawful damage, causing harm and
rioting with offensive weapons.
The 18 accused persons are Eunice Asante, Samuel Asiedu,
Opare Isaac, Seth Twum Ampofo, Kwaku Amoako, Francis Yeboah, Eric Kofi Ansah
Boakye, Charles Kumodzi and Frank Kumodzi.
The rest are Solomon Owusu Yeboah, Haruna Issah, Gyankyi
Kingsley, Mohammed Abdullai, Kofi Torku, Kwabena Boateng, Evans Tawiah, Otoo
Bright and Wisdom Agbenya.
Four of the accused persons who were granted an
unconditional bail last week, on grounds of ill-health by the Human Rights
Court as a result of an application filed by their counsel, Mr. Samuel Atta
Akyea, included the Queen mother of Akooko, Afia Afram Korantemaa II, Nana Yaw
Okyere, the Abusuapanyin, Ofosu Adjei, the Assemblyman and Kwasi Botwe, the
Dwantoahene.
All the four except the queen mother were present at the
court.
Briefing the Court, Mr Cyril Boateng Keteku, the prosecuting
State Attorney, said the Criminal Investigative Department of the Ghana Police
Service was yet to conclude its investigations on the case, and pleaded with
the court to give it more time to conclude the investigations.
Mr Prosper Yaw Ntow, Counsel for seven of the accused
persons, whose plea for the granting of bail by the court were refused, argued
that his clients were not residents of Akooko and that they were only pulled by
curiosity to the town to see what was happening there, “only for them to be
rounded up by the police.”
