Tanzania scraps government Christmas cards to save cash
 Tanzanian officials will not be allowed to send out the usual government printed Christmas and New Year cards this year as part of belt-tightening measures by the new president.

John Magufuli has implemented a series of austerity steps since being sworn in on Nov. 5, including cancelling Independence Day festivities and restricting foreign travel by officials.

The president’s chief secretary “has prohibited the printing of Christmas and New Year cards at the government’s expense,” the presidency said in a statement. “Anyone who wants to print those cards should do so at his or her own personal cost.”

Ho Poly student found dead in hostel


A female student of the Ho Polytechnic in the Volta region has been found dead in a pool of blood by her mates on Monday dawn at 'Divine Star', a private hostel.

The victim, Naomi Kpodzro, who is a first year HND Fashion student, was found with knife and gunshot wounds on her body.

It is, however, unclear what led to the killing of the lady by an unidentified assailant(s).
Confirming the news to Accra-based Starr FM, assistant registrar in-charge of Public relations at the Polytechnic, Mr. Isaac Meyir said the young lady was pronounced dead upon arrival at the regional Hospital in Ho.

25-Yr-Old Woman Survives Car Crash But Killed Minutes Later While Going To Take Her Purse


A 25-year-old mother-of-one who survived a car crash on Sunday morning has died after going back to the vehicle to grab her purse, police claim.


Brittany Leith, mother of a three-year-old girl, was left completely uninjured when her Nissan hit the center median and flipped over onto its roof on Long Island's Southern State Parkway at 3.54am.

However, after clambering out of the wreckage through a cracked window and being helped to the roadside by other drivers, Leith went back to her car to collect her belongings.

Amidu - Judgment debt report is 'NDC election manifesto'

 Anti-graft campaigner Martin Amidu, has described the government’s white paper on the report on the judgement debts as “another NDC election manifesto.”

According to him, the purpose of the report is to suppress political corruption.

The white paper on the judgement debt report was released last week. It included various judgement debts which have been paid over the years, with pronouncements made on the basis of the recommendations of the judgement debt commission.

However, Martin Amidu has said in a statement that “No one knows the sampling methodology used to select the cases contained in the report to make detailed comments in the NDC Political Manifesto White Paper such that only cases affecting political opponents and detested NDC members like myself have been slanted and dealt with as though the White Paper were an election manifesto to vindicate the Government and some of its officials from political judgment debt corruption.”

 The Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) has been directed by government to investigate NPP Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa K.T Hammond on the disbursement of $900,000 from the sale of the drill ship which belonged to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) .

 This was contained in a government white paper on the report by the Judgment Debt Commission.

The White Paper states that “K. T. Hammond sold the Drill ship for US$24 million, used US$19.5 million to pay off the [judgment] debt, and gave US$1 million to the London solicitors, who had represented Ghana in the drill ship sale negotiations, Constant & Constant.”

Amidu-Anas issue must be investigate by Independent Commission

MP for Asuogyaman, Kofi Osei Ameyaw is demanding the establishment of an independent commission to probe claims that government sponsored private investigations to expose corrupt judges and MPs.

According to the MP, the claims which were made by former Attorney General Martin Amidu, is “shaking the foundations of the separation of powers enshrined in the 1992 constitution."

The separation of powers meant to keep the Executive and the Judiciary at arms’ length is being endangered and along with it the independence of judges, the MP expressed concern.

Herve Renard sacked from Lille

 Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach Herve Renard has been sacked as manager of French Ligue 1 club Lille, less than six months after being appointed.

"LOSC announce the decision to amicably end its collaboration with Herve Renard. Herve Renard is therefore no longer the coach of LOSC," read a statement on the club's website on Wednesday.

The 47-year-old Frenchman, who led the Ivory Coast to Cup of Nations glory in February, was only appointed in May following the departure of Rene Girard but leaves with 2011 double winners Lille in 16th place in Ligue 1 after 13 games.

Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Kweku Baako Jnr has discredited recent allegations by former Attorney General, Mr Martin Amidu, that government had commissioned Tiger Eye PI to uncover the rot in the judicial system.

According to him, the supposed evidence Mr Amidu claimed to have in respect of his allegations were wrong, adding that his "pillar" of evidence to show that there’s a connection between Tiger Eye and government relative to judicial corruption investigation had collapsed.

Describing Mr Amidu as a person with integrity, Mr Baako nonetheless, said it was worrying the tangent on which he was making his allegations.

Bayern stand by Beckenbauer

Bayern Munich will stand by honourary club president Franz Beckenbauer amid calls for the embattled German legend to explain his part in the 2006 World Cup scandal, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

Beckenbauer, 70, headed up Germany's organising committee for the 2006 World Cup finals, the awarding of which has become the subject of a police investigation here after magazine Spiegel made allegations that Fifa votes were bought in 2000.

'The Kaiser' has remained silent even after Wolfgang Niersbach resigned as president of the German Football Association (DFB) on Monday and took "political responsibility" for the scandal.

On Tuesday, the DFB confirmed reports of a draft agreement, signed in part by Beckenbauer, which daily Bild claims was aimed at buying "votes for the German bid" in July 2000 – just four days before Germany was awarded the 2006 World Cup.

But Rummenigge says the current German league leaders will stand by his former Bayern and West Germany teammate Beckenbauer, who captained his country to the 1974 World Cup title and coached the triumphant 1990 team.

Valbuena has no ill will towards Benzema

Mathieu Valbuena feels "no particular animosity" towards his France colleague Karim Benzema, who has been charged in the sex tape blackmail affair involving the midfielder, Valbuena's lawyer said on Tuesday.

"There was no animosity before and there still is none," Didier Domat, representing Valbuena, told AFP as he called for "prudence" after extracts were released to the press of telephone recordings of Benzema discussing the affair.

"One cannot remain indifferent to what one sees in the press. Certainly if we discover that all this is true, he (Valbuena) will not be his friend," continued the lawyer for the 31-year-old Lyon player.

The former GIMPA Reactor made the proposal at a symposium to mark the fiftieth (50th) anniversary of Social Security in Ghana last Thursday.

Speaking on the topic, “Social Security – The Way Forward”, Prof. Adei said the new scheme when adopted will replace the Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty (LEAP) program.
