Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has praised President John Mahama for the knowledge he expressed on the various projects his government is undertaking.
Contributing to a discussion on Radio Gold on Saturday, Mr. Pratt Jnr said he was highly impressed that the President appears to be “on top of issues.”
“I watched the President on television and I must confess that I was highly impressed. What impressed me was the fact that he was exceedingly calm and relaxed and that he was able in that very relaxed manner, to explain all the projects and details that were not in the book,” he said.
President Mahama on Tuesday addressed the nation by giving an account of the projects his government is undertaking to improve the lives of Ghanaian citizens.
The event dubbed “Accounting To The People” was aired live on radio and on television.
According to Mr. Pratt Jnr, the impression he got from watching the President on TV at home was that “he knew what he was talking about; that he was familiar with the developments in all the regions and districts and knew these projects at first hand…and that was very, very impressive. I was so very impressed by the fact that he appeared to be on top of the issues.”
He however chastised sections of the general public who have been criticising the President for publishing his accomplishments in a book as well as addressing the nation to tout his achievements
Mr. Pratt Jnr argued that when it comes to the publication of books, the first book was published during President John Kufuor’s regime under the slogan, ‘So far, so good’ “so this is about the third or fourth time.”
He added that this is not the first time a President is addressing the nation outside Parliament.
“The President has on several occasions gone to Parliament to give an account of his stewardship through the state of the nation address. It is also in this same light that the Minister of Finance presents the budget on behalf of the President…so the national constitution itself recognizes the need for feedback; it recognizes the need for elected officers to account for their stewardship and this exercise of launching this book is part of the fulfilment of that obligation.”
He said there will be differences of opinion regarding the importance of the various projects the President mentioned in his book because “all the 25 million Ghanaians cannot think the same way.”
He pointed out that the difference in opinion is “normal discourse which should occur.”
