Fire destroys NOBISCO dormitory

Fire destroyed one of the boys’ dormitories of the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) in Tamale in the Northern Region last  Thursday.

Forty second-year students of the school were affected by the inferno which started at about 9.10 a.m.

Items destroyed in the blaze included 20 double beds, 40 mattresses, textbooks and exercise books, ‘chop boxes’, trunks, two ceiling fans, food and an unspecified amount of money.

There were no casualties.

Confirming

The Northern Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Assistant Divisional Officer Grade I, Mr Paul Aikins, confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic in an interview.

He said it took personnel of the service about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.

He said, however, that the cause of the fire was yet to be established and that investigations had begun into the incident.

Intervention

The headmaster of the school, Mr Nuhu Inusah, said the school had provided accommodation for all the 40 students who were affected by the fire.

He said he had used money from his personal account to purchase some exercise books for all the affected students.

“Some of their colleagues too have given them clothes because they lost all their belongings in the fire”, he said.

Mr Inusah said the school was yet to notify the National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO) for assistance.

Commendation

He commended the fire service personnel for their prompt response to their distress call, saying, “had it not been for their timely intervention, the fire would have affected other dormitories”.

He said the incident occurred while students were in their classrooms learning.
